About iSquared

 

iSquared is a ‘popular maths’ magazine which was launched in September 2007. The aim of this magazine is to publish engaging and informative articles on areas of mathematics that are relevant to the modern world. The magazine is targeted at all those who are interested in mathematics and are keen to find out about its many and varied applications. Readers need not have a background in mathematics, although a grasp of sixth-form mathematics would be helpful for understanding some articles.

 

iSquared Magazine is designed and edited by Sarah Shepherd. Sarah completed a 4-year mathematics degree at St Hugh's College, Oxford, and is now studying for a PhD in Applied Mathematics at the University of Nottingham. Her research is in the area of mathematical medicine, and involves developing mathematical models for the process of stem cell differentiation in the embryonic nervous system.   

 

Editorial advisory board

 

The purpose of the editorial advisory board is to review potential articles and provide general guidance on the magazine's content.

 

Professor Christopher J. Budd: Chris Budd is Professor of Applied Mathematics at the University of Bath and Chair of Mathematics at the Royal Institution of Great Britain. His research interests include partial differential equations, numerical analysis and industrial applications of mathematics. He is enthusiastic about communicating mathematics to the public.

 

Dr Mary Lunn: Mary Lunn is a Fellow of Mathematics at St Hugh’s College, Oxford. Her research interests include medical and psychological applications of survival analysis, the study of cognitive decline with ageing and the stochastic modelling of microbial systems.

 

Professor Michael C. Mackey: Michael Mackey is the Joseph Morley Drake Professor of Physiology and Director of the Centre for Nonlinear Dynamics in Physiology and Medicine at McGill University, Canada. His research involves the mathematical modelling of biological, physical and economic systems, including applications to haematological diseases, neural networks and commodity prices.  

 

Professor Brian D. Sleeman: Brian Sleeman is Professor of Applied Mathematics at the University of Leeds. His research interests include mathematical biology and applied analysis. His recent work has concentrated on tumour angiogenesis, cell movement by random walks, and scattering theories for both rough obstacles and soft solids.
